A look into the crystal ball.

Not long ago, I had a long phone call with a colleague from the industry.
We just wanted to catch up for a few minutes but an hour later, we found ourselves deep in a topic that’s been on my mind ever since.

We talked about the future of the website.
Not any specific one but the idea of a website itself.

At some point, I said something that made the line go silent for a second:

In five years, websites won’t primarily be made for humans anymore but for AI agents.

Sounds like crystal-ball talk, I know.
But the evidence is surprisingly strong.

The beginning of the end of the click

Fewer and fewer people click on ads or classic search results.
Recent studies show: once Google displays its AI Overviews, click-through rates drop dramatically – in some cases by up to 89%.
What used to be organic traffic is now swallowed by zero-click searches.
People read the AI summary, get their answer, and move on.

In other words:

Websites are losing their role as destinations and becoming data sources instead.
They no longer exist for humans to visit, but for machines to learn from.

From “browsing” to “thinking”

New AI browsers like Perplexity Comet or the upcoming OpenAI browser perfectly illustrate this shift.
They don’t “browse” the web like tourists on a sightseeing tour.
They navigate like personal assistants who already know what you want – and take care of it for you.

The internet is turning into a dual-use system:

One side still built for humans who click, read, and scroll, the other for machines that communicate, compare, and interpret in the background.

Websites as APIs – not as storefronts

What “responsive design” was in the 2010s, “Agent Interface Optimization” will be in the next decade.
Websites won’t just need to look good they’ll need to make sense to machines.
APIs, structured data, semantic markup these are the new design tools.

The key question will be

How machine-readable is your website?
Not how beautiful it is, but how well it can be understood.

Think of it like this: it’s less about design and more about whether your website speaks fluent Excel. 😉

AI agents take over the web

Analysts like Gartner predict that by 2028, roughly one-third of all online interactions will be handled by autonomous AI agents.
These agents will search, compare, buy, and even handle returns – all automatically.
In e-commerce, they’ll become personal shopping companions who pick products, make payments, and send return labels.

It sounds like science fiction, but it’s already in progress.
Google, IBM, Vertex AI – they’re all investing heavily in this future.

The new invisible web

I believe the web as we know it won’t disappear it will simply become invisible.
Behind every search, every purchase, every click, systems will think, decide, and act on our behalf.

And the traditional website?

It will still exist but not for us.
It’ll be the stage where machines talk to each other.
The database that makes things visible when they need to be.

Conclusion

If you’re building a website today, you’re not just building it for people.
You’re building it for machines the ones that represent you, understand you, and recommend you.

So maybe the real question isn’t
how people find your website but how AI agents understand it.
